CELLO

Sebastien Hurtaud 09

Sébastien Hurtaud has "the soul of a Rostropovich and the technic of a Feuermann" (Fanfare), whereas The Strad Magazine describes him as "a cellist to watch, because he has his own style of performance, a high level of imagination, and a combination of elegance and drive".

After receiving the highest honours from several world-leading music schools (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, University of Dallas), Sébastien Hurtaud is laureate of the Aldo Parisot competition in South-Korea and the Naumburg Foundation in New York. He won first prize  at the 2009 Adam International Cello Competition. Subsequently, he played various concerts as a soloist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Since the age of 15, he has been concertizing as a soloist and chamber musician all over the world. He has performed in renowned concert halls such as the New York Metropolitan Museum, New York, Dallas Caruth Concert Hall, Haden Freeman Concert Hall in Manchester, Icho Hall, Tokyo, Mogador Theater, Salle Cortot in Paris, and Theatro Manoel in Malta. He has also appeared with the Taiwan Youth Symphonic Orchestra, and at international festivals including the Charles Wadworth music series in Nashville, the Cello festival in Fort Worth, the Manchester Brahms Festival, Salon Musical of Belfort, and the International Cello Festival of Beauvais, as well as Musique en Ré, Classique au Vert, Colmar Opera, Nancyphonies, and the Deauville, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Laon Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Vexin Festivals, Flaine festival op.74, Moulin d’Andé, and Musique à la Ferme, to name a few.

Sebastien Hurtaud is regularly performing also as chamber musician accompanied by such musicians as Bruno Canino, Pieter-Jelle Deboer, Bertrand Giraud to name a few. Sébastien Hurtaud recorded the complete cello sonatas by Paul Hindemith for the Naxos label with the pianist Pamela Hurtado International critics emphasised the "entrancing imagination, real personality, maturity and intelligence" of "a cellist definitely worth hearing".

Sébastien Hurtaud has regularly performed with orchestras under the baton of Antoni Wit, Werner Andreas Albert, Arie van Beek, Edmon Colomer, Pieter-Jelle Deboer, Jacques Mercier, Jacek Blaszczyk, amongst others. His solo repertoire includes the great cello concertos (Shostakovich, Haydn, Dvorak, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, etc.) as well as "jazz concertos", including Gulda's Cello Concerto.

He is also deeply interested in discovering and premiering new contemporary works. Recently, he performed a piece by pianist and composer Lucas Debargue in the Moscow International Performing Arts Center. The world premiere of a new cello concerto, especially composed for him by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr to commemorate the centenary of World War I, will be premiered tonight in New Zealand with the NZSO, then performed in France at Laon Festival with the Orchestre Symphonique de Lorraine, and is supported by Creative New Zealand and The “Label du Centenaire de la Première guerre Mondiale”.
