Beethoven Coriolan Overture, Op. 62
André de Ridder Conductor
Beethoven’s Overture was written for the play Coriolan by Heinrich Joseph von Collin. Coriolan was based on the story of exiled Roman general Coriolanus and first performed in 1807.
Beethoven’s Overture is a canny distillation of the conflict between Coriolanus’s implacable aggression and the influence of his mother, who pleads with her son to show mercy on Rome. These two forces are represented by emotionally opposing melodies or subjects in the Overture.
