Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
Hamish McKeich Conductor
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 boasts perhaps the most famous opening of any piece of classical music. Its "da-da-da-dah" rhythmic motif has found its way into pop songs, Morse code and even Doctor Who!
Its ubiquity belies its genius: by weaving this distinctive motif as a common thread throughout all four movements, Beethoven revolutionised symphonic form by creating a symphony with a cyclic rather than linear structure.
