Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 IV. Saltarello - Presto
James Judd Conductor
Gathering limits prevented the NZSO from performing to audiences for much of 2021, but we wanted to keep the band playing together and provide music for people at home. We recorded a number of great works during this time under the baton of Music Director Emeritus James Judd and with the support of broadcast partner RNZ Concert.
This is one of these works, and we hope it is of interest to you.
Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4, also known as the Italian Symphony, is one of his most celebrated works. The fourth movement is energetic and full of lively rhythm. It is inspired by Mendelssohn’s travels in Italy, capturing the bright, sunny atmosphere of the country. The music builds with lots of fast string passages and powerful brass sections, creating a feeling of movement and celebration.
