R. Schumann Manfred Overture, Op. 115
James Judd Conductor
When Robert Schumann first read Lord Byron’s poem Manfred, it deeply affected him. He wrote in his notes, “Agitated state of mind – read Byron’s Manfred in bed – terrible night.” Almost twenty years later, he created music for the poem, which included 15 pieces and an overture.
He composed it quickly and told a friend, “I have never put so much love and energy into a piece as I did for Manfred.” Manfred premiered in 1852, and Schumann wanted it to be called a “dramatic poem with music” instead of an opera or melodrama, which was unprecedented.
Today, the full Manfred isn’t performed very often. Only the Overture remains popular and is frequently played in concerts.
