We’re on the road Summerset-ting Up Camp!

The NZSO’s unmissable concert tours Jubilation and Reflections presented in association with Summerset Retirement Villages are now on the road.

Both concerts are part of our 2024 Setting Up Camp, where we present a selection of daytime and evening concerts and events in each city and town  we visit.

Our intimate concert experience Reflections: Schubert & Beethoven begins in Carterton tonight, featuring a talented quartet of NZSO string players: Assistant Principal violinist Jessica Oddie, Assistant Concertmaster Yuka Eguchi, Associate Principal violist Alexander McFarlane, and Associate Principal cellist Ken Ichinose

Franz Schubert's sublime ‘unfinished’ Quartettsatz and Beethoven's extraordinary String Quartet No. 9 are matched by one of the greatest works of the Elizabethan age, John Dowland’s Flow, My Tears and one of the newest works written for a string quartet, American Caroline Shaw's electrifying Entr'acte. Shaw, the youngest ever winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Music, is a versatile musician known for her collaborations with artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Kanye West.

Tomorrow you can enjoy Reflections in Paraparaumu before we head for the South Island with performances in Nelson (7 June), Dunedin (12 June) and Christchurch (14 June).

Jubilation: Strauss & Shostakovich is performed in Blenheim, Invercargill, and Dunedin from 06 June.

Conducted by NZSO Music Director Emeritus James Judd, experience masterpieces by Richard Strauss and Dimitri Shostakovich and two exciting contemporary New Zealand works, Henry Meng's exuberant Fanfare and Sai Natarajan's whimsical We Long for an Adventure.

Maestro Judd hails Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme as a “a theatrical feast of lively music and moods.”

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, written to commemorate the Soviet victory at the end of World War II, was at first misinterpreted as support for Stalin's regime. But beneath its jubilant and melodic surface, lurks complexity, irony, and sorrow – which audiences have embraced for decades.

Setting Up Camp’s Relaxed Concerts, an opportunity for neurodivergent children and adults to enjoy the NZSO in a sensory-friendly environment, are in Blenheim and Nelson, presented in association with Autism NZ.

Enjoy a music-themed meal with Everybody Eats

We're thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership between Everybody Eats and the NZSO that will bring NZSO Members a unique pre-concert dining experience before our A Hero’s Life: Ein Heldenleben concert on 25 July.

Everybody Eats is a pioneering organisation that uses food that would otherwise be discarded to create delicious and affordable meals. By diverting this surplus food, they're not only reducing waste but also providing nourishing meals to the community.

For this special collaboration, Everybody Eats will craft a themed menu inspired by the Richard Strauss classic, Ein Heldenleben. This means you can expect a culinary journey that complements the evening's musical programme, making your concert experience even more immersive.

Exclusive to NZSO Members, the three-course set menu is priced at just $25 per person. Book before Monday 15 July and receive a complimentary drink. This is the first time the NZSO has partnered with Everybody Eats, and we're delighted to offer NZSO Members this sustainable and enjoyable dining option.

We encourage NZSO Members to join us in supporting Everybody Eats and the NZSO's shared commitment to the community and the environment.

We look forward to seeing you at the concerts and enjoying these delectable, eco-friendly meals together.

NYO Victory – a music experience you won’t want to miss

Ahead of her debut at the prestigious BBC Proms this year, New Zealand conductor Tianyi Lu returns home to lead the NZSO National Youth Orchestra.

NYO Victory: Khachaturian & Prokofiev, presented in association with the Adam Foundation, is a concert experience you won't want to miss.

Tianyi’s passion for music is matched by her burgeoning international career, from being a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to the first Female Conductor-in-Residence for the Welsh National Opera.

NYO Victory introduces the remarkable pianist Shan Liu, following his success in the 2023 NZSO Young Artists’ Showcase.

At just 13 years of age, Shan’s already impressive resume includes first prizes in the Netherlands and Macao, and performing in Australia, Germany and the USA. He’ll perform Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto, the work that first introduced the Russian composer to Western audiences.

We’re also excited to premiere Speculations on a Rainbow by another homegrown talent, Jessie Leov, our 2024 NYO Composer-in-Residence.

NYO Victory marks the 25th year of the visionary support of Verna and the late Denis Adam through the Adam Foundation. Their association has allowed generations of young New Zealanders to collaborate with the finest musicians from here and overseas in a full-size symphony orchestra.
