Flute, Associate Principal

Kirstin joined the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 2003.

Originally from the Waikato, she completed undergraduate degrees in music and English in New Zealand before moving to the United States to further her studies. She earned a Master's from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University in Texas.

Before moving to the US, Kirstin was a finalist in the TVNZ Young Musician's National Concerto Competition and won the Rotorua Concerto Competition.

She is currently an Artist Teacher of Flute at the New Zealand School of Music. In 2010, she was invited to perform at the American National Flute Convention and later became the guest artist at the Hamilton Flute Festival.

Kirstin performs with the Wellington-based contemporary ensemble Stroma and is a member of the Celtic-influenced band Kontiki Tangle.

I feel extremely lucky to play with such talented colleagues in the NZSO and am constantly inspired by the playing I hear around me. There is a special camaraderie amongst our players, which might come about because we are a touring orchestra and therefore spend a lot of time together. After 20 years, this is still my dream job and one which I am very grateful to have.
