Matthew Allison

Trombone, Associate Principal

Matthew Allison is the Associate Principal Trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Before joining the NZSO, Matthew was second trombone in La Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana in Spain. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Melbourne Ring Orchestra, amongst others.

Matthew earned a Bachelor's Degree and a Professional Studies Diploma from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Mark Lawrence and Paul Welcomer. In 2004, he won the Robert Marstellar Competition at the International Trombone Festival in Ithaca, New York.

In addition to his orchestral career, Matthew serves as an Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music. He is also a dedicated member of the award-winning jazz octet, The Jac, The Richter City Rebels, and BonaNZa – New Zealand's premier trombone quartet.
