Rowan Prior

Cello

Rowan began her cello journey at the age of six in England, inspired by her two older brothers who also played instruments.

The siblings formed a family trio and triumphed in numerous competitions across Southern England. In addition to their success, they proudly joined the ranks of both the Hampshire County Youth and Training Orchestras.

In 1975, Rowan and her family emigrated to Christchurch, where she began studying cello with Ellen Doyle.

I was part of the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music (CSIM) and was involved in all of its wonderful opportunities - the orchestral playing, chamber music and coaching.

In 1983, she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During her time there, she studied cello with Florence Hooton and Alexander Bailey, as well as chamber music with Sidney Griller from the Griller Quartet.

Rowan returned to New Zealand and joined the NZSO in 1996. She also performs in various chamber music ensembles, including the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra, Felix the Quartet, Amici Ensemble, and Stroma.

I absolutely love chamber music in all its forms - such an incredible repertoire to explore and enjoy. It is a privilege to belong to the NZSO - for me, it is the largest chamber music group.
