Christine Jeon

Cello, Young Artist Showcase Concerto Soloist

Christine Jeon (2007) was born in Christchurch and is under the tutelage of James Tennant since 2019. She passed both her piano and cello (ABRSM) grade 8 exams with distinction in the same year and received the Noel Newson Award in the High Scorers' Concert in 2017. In 2019, she passed her dipABRSM Performance Piano exam. In both the 2016 and 2017 competitions, she got awarded the most promising girl in the IRMT Music competitions. She was awarded the Soroptimist Music Scholarship with the SMP (Specialist Music Programme) during her years at Westburn School.

Christine has been attending St Andrew’s College as a music scholar since her intermediate years. Christine also passed her LTCL Cello Recital exam in 2020. In 2020, Christine and ‘Les Apaches’ piano trio made it to the national final of the NZCT Chamber contest, performing the Ravel Piano Trio in A minor. Following this, in 2021, she qualified as a national finalist for the NZCT chamber competition again with two groups and was ultimately able to win in the group ‘Vich Perfect’ by performing the Shostakovich Piano Trio No.2. Additionally in 2021, she was invited to Jack Richard’s in Gisborne to perform a cello recital.

Earlier in 2022, Christine was selected as the National finalist in the National String Competition as the youngest competitor and was awarded the 3rd Prize and People’s Choice Award. Christine has also won the first prize in the International Melbourne String Festival Competition in the open age category in 2022. She is now playing on the Hewitt cello made available through a generous loan by the Michael Hill Foundation for Art and Music. In the future, Christine wants to continue to strive in her musical career and travel the world with her talents.
